There are many different types of humidifiers available, and while many people shop based on the type of humidifier they need, many shoppers just want the type that is easiest to clean.
Like any appliance that uses water, humidifiers need regular cleaning to ensure they don’t develop mold or algae. Luckily, cleaning your humidifier is pretty easy no matter what type you get.
Ultrasonic humidifiers are generally small and have the fewest parts, thereby making them the easiest to clean. They usually consist of just a water reservoir, a water cap, and the base. All of these pieces are simple to clean with a damp cloth. Some ultrasonic humidifier water reservoirs have small openings, and we recommend a soft bottle brush (like those used for cleaning baby bottles) to clean these.
If your ultrasonic model has an essential oil diffuser, this will also need to be cleaned regularly.
Evaporative humidifiers come in all sizes, from single room models to whole-house units. The smaller evaporative humidifiers are very easy to clean since they usually have just the reservoir or water bottle and the wick (wicks are not washable). Larger, whole-house humidifiers can be a little more complicated to clean since they may have multiple water bottles, bigger reservoirs, and more parts like wick housings for multiple wicks. Still, even with the additional size and pieces, the cleaning process is easy since the larger models have an open reservoir that is easy to access.
Steam humidifiers, also called vaporizers, typically have the most parts to clean since there is a heating element within the unit that brings the water to a boiling point (which makes the steam); That said, these pieces come apart easily for cleaning and go back together quickly. If you’ve decided on a steam model, rest assured your cleaning process will still be a simple one.
All of our humidifiers come with easy-to-follow cleaning instructions that can be found in your owner’s manual, or here online. Just click on the humidifier you’re interested in (or already own), and click the owner’s manual link.
