Finding the Best Humidifier for You

Of all the questions we see at AIRCARE HQ, this is the one we see the most: “What is the best humidifier?” While you might think we immediately answer, “AIRCARE,” that’s usually not the case. We actually answer with more questions.

The best humidifier for you depends on…you. Your lifestyle and your home best determine the type of humidifier you need. Before we dive into the questions that help us help you pick a humidifier, it helps to understand the different types of humidifiers.

  • Evaporative humidifiers: use a wicking filter to absorb water. As the water evaporates, the humidifier’s fan blows the evaporated moisture into the air. These humidifiers are the best option for whole-house humidification.
  • Ultrasonic humidifiers: instead of a wicking filter, these models use a nebulizer, vibrating at ultrasonic speed that breaks water particles into an ultrafine mist. The humidifier then, silently, propels this mist into the air.
  • Steam humidifiers: these models are also wickless and include a heating element that boils the water in the humidifier. This mist is then released into the air. These models are best to help treat respiratory illnesses.

So, how do you know which humidifier is best for you? Here are the questions we ask customers to help them decide.

How big is your home?

Any type of humidifier will work for apartments, smaller homes, and single rooms. For larger homes – 1,000 square feet and bigger – evaporative humidifiers are the winner. Ultrasonic and steam units are typically smaller and can’t compete with the output of a large, whole house humidifier.

Humidifiers are rated by coverage area, so check the packaging to see how many square feet the humidifier covers. Keep in mind that homes in areas that are extremely dry or extremely cold – or both – are the hardest to humidify. For this reason, you might want to size up when selecting a humidifier.

Do you have allergies or asthma?

For those with respiratory concerns, evaporative humidifiers are the way to go. The wicking filter used in these models helps trap allergens, dust, pollen, dander, and other particles. Medical News Today stated humidifiers benefit people with respiratory ailments, reduce asthma symptoms, and reduce allergens.

How do you feel about filters?

Many customers don’t want to replace the filters and wicks used with evaporative humidifiers. For these customers, an ultrasonic or steam humidifier is a good option. Many of our customers use multiple units placed in the rooms they occupy most, like their bedrooms and living rooms.

Warm mist or cool mist?

If you want a cool-mist humidifier, perfect for year-round use, any non-steam humidifier will work for you. Steam humidifiers can also be used year-round, but do tend to make the area feel warmer. They are the best for alleviating congestion and other cold and flu symptoms and are preferred by many customers for this reason. Warm mist humidifiers are also helpful with cold and allergy symptoms and are an option on ultrasonic humidifiers. Our DUET and MESA models offer dual warm and cool mist settings in one unit.

Do you want to use essential oils?

Essential oils can be used in our ultrasonic models only. Our NOVA model lets you add essential oils directly to the water – no diffuser tray needed.

Determining the best humidifier is less about reviews and more about you and your needs. While we truly do believe AIRCARE humidifiers are the very best humidifiers in the entire world (obviously), finding the best model for our customers is our most important job.
