We get a lot of questions here at AIRCARE HQ about wicks. Customers ask how often to change them, how to clean them, and if their humidifiers can run without them. In this blog, we’ll answer those questions, and a few others, to help take the wonder out of wick care.
Are They Wicks or Filters?
Actually, both terms are correct! Evaporative humidifiers use a wick to absorb water from the humidifier’s tank. As the water evaporates, the humidifier’s fan blows the water vapor into your air. During this wicking process, the wick traps minerals and other impurities floating around in your water. Since this stuff is trapped in the wick, it’s not released into your air. Another benefit – medical studies have shown for years that evaporative humidifiers can help control allergy and asthma symptoms.
You can also add an air filter to many of our humidifiers. Our air filters have two filtration layers: an electrostatic layer for airborne particles, and a carbon layer for odors. Just look for our units that use our 1050 or 1051 air filters.
How Often Should I Replace My Wick?
We recommend changing your wick every 30-90 days, but your water quality will ultimately dictate your wick’s replacement frequency. Areas with very hard or very soft water will typically require more frequent wick changes, since your wick is working harder to filter your water. Keeping your humidifier clean will help this. You can also use our 1970 Bacteriostat to help kill bacteria and other yucky stuff in your water, which helps extend the life of your wick.
Can I Clean My Wick?
No. Our wicks are made of highly absorbent paper, which makes them great for wicking water, but not sturdy enough to withstand scrubbing or a run through the dishwasher. Cleaning your humidifier regularly is the best way to keep your wick clean.
How Do I Replace My Wick?
Wick replacement instructions vary by model, but changing a wick is pretty easy to do. You’ll find your model’s instructions in your owner’s manual. If you’ve lost your manual, you can view and download another copy here on our site. Prefer to watch a video? We show you how to change all our humidifiers’ wicks on our YouTube channel – AIRCARE by Essick Air.
Can I Use My Humidifier Without a Wick?
No. While your humidifier may run without a wick installed, the wick is necessary to humidify your air. Without the wick, your humidifier is just a fan.
How Do I Get Replacement Wicks?
You can order replacement wicks in single or multi-packs here on our site, and from most of our retailers in the US and Canada.
